This volume offers a new perspective on the Pop Art creative dynamic that has been around since the 1950s. Pop art challenged tradition by asserting that an artist's use of the mass-produced visual commodities of popular culture is contiguous with the perspective of fine art. Pop art employs aspects of mass culture, such as advertising, comic books and mundane cultural objects. It is widely interpreted as a reaction to the then-dominant ideas of abstract expressionism, as well as an expansion upon them. The book discusses the major contributors to the Pop/Mass-Culture Art tradition right up to the present, including a number of artists who have never previously been associated with so-called Pop Art but whose work showed a strong interest in mass-culture.
