This beautiful volume explores eight European estates that, despite war, taxes, and the passage of time, have remained in the same families for centuries. The photographs are redolent in atmosphere and the text is revealing, due to the authors long friendships with the owners of these great houses. Offering an inside view of a highly refined way of life, Private Splendor reveals the secrets that kept these homes in private hands. The houses include Sevilles Casa de Pilatos, owned by Spains most illustrious grandee; Harewood House in Yorkshire, owned by a cousin of Queen Elizabeth; Germanys Schloss Regensburg, occupied by the flamboyant Princess Gloria von Thurn and Taxis; and the Palazzo Sachetti near Vatican City, whose enormous Sala dei Mapi is entirely frescoed by Francesco Salviati (15101563). Private Splendor is a sumptuously illustrated volume on the homes of modern European aristocrats. The author explains that it has been quite
a feat in entrepreneurial creativity, as well as an exercise in ancestral preservation, to maintain the private control of the resplendent palaces, castles, and villas featured in the text and photographs. From the medieval Kasteel de Haar in Utrecht, to the Elizabethan Harewood House in Yorkshire, to the Baroque Palazzo Gangi in Palermo, and the sprawling Palßcio de Fronteira outside of Lisbon, among others, the author and photographer have collaborated to form an astonishingly luxurious survey of homes that are typically seen only from a tour group or by invitation. The richly-toned, full-page photographs provide an excellent sense of the experience of these enviable spaces, and the text contains carefully researched histories of the construction of the buildings and their many inhabitants; it is also notable for the extensive level of cooperation between the author, photographer, and contemporary occupants of these majestic homes, in which the challenges and rewards of the aristocratic life are fully disclosed.
