Richard Davis was a turn of the century reporter known for his romance novels, plays and short stories. His years of experience as a war correspondent influenced much of his writing. His most noted works were Gallegher and Other Stories (1891), Van Bibber and Others (1892), and Ranson's Folly (1902). First published in 1906, Real Soldiers of Fortune is an early biography of Major-General Henry Ronald Douglas MacIver -- Baron James Harden-Hickey -- Winston Spencer Churchill -- Captain Philo Norton McGiffin -- General William Walker, the king of the filibusters -and Major Burnham, chief of scouts.
