Mr. Haynes book brings much to light that has remained unknown about the Chicago music scene, and is especially good on the "satanic cult" at the heart of that musical situation. His description of Robert Briggs, the "working mans friend" is particularly telling: Briggs was to leave the restaurant business behind and run guns, and the soft pharmaceuticals until his career was ended at the end of a lawyers writ: he is today the president and CEO of Briggs Inc. the granite and marble combine which supplied Saddam Hussein. Its a fact that Mr. Haynes could not have known, but Chicago careers have a varigated trajectory... Mr. Haynes included. The limpid prose style that Mr. Haynes adopts seems to owe something to Ronald Firbank and Walter Pater, and his insights into the origins of the Pre Raphaelites rank with those of many a better paid Art critic. Haynes displays a knowledge of the finer points of Surrealism, and of the Futurist manifesto, and he clearly owes a very large debt to Marinetti. His excoriation of aspects of the Chicago 'scene' is telling in that his group: the folk rock trio Alliotto Haynes and Jeremiah was savage in its attempt to unseat a seated Democratic City Council, many of whose members were later indicted for crimes against "Nature." Mr. Haynes is to be applauded for his efforts to bring the whole of the sordid yet inspiring saga of Chicago music to the stage, tho the production, tentatively titled "Its Art Goddamit" is said to be looking for a financial backer. We wish him luck. Warren Leming
