About the author (2001)

RAYDA JACOBS returned to South Africa in 1995 after an absence of twenty-seven years. Her first book, The Middle Children, was published in Toronto in 1994. Her first novel, Eyes of the Sky, was published in 1996 and was awarded the Herman Charles Bosman Prize for English Literature. She is also the author of The Slave Book (1998), Sachs Street (2001), the highly popular Confessions of a Gambler (2003), Postcards from South Africa (2004), The Mecca Diaries (2005), My Father s Orchid (2006), and Masquerade (2008). Rayda also wrote the script for the film which was adapted from her book Confessions of a Gambler, which won The Sunday Times and Herman Charles Bosman awards, and also garnered six nominations for the film. She lives in Cape Town and has become a well-known author and filmmaker in South Africa.
