About the author (1975)

Issahakian's work includes legends, short stories, political essays, an unfinished novel, prose cameos, and memoirs, but he is best known for his poems recited as popular songs. In 1895 he was imprisoned for political activities. Songs and Hurts, his first book, appeared in 1896. Again accused of conspiring against the czar, he was exiled to Odessa and jailed. He escaped to Paris, then returned to Armenia for four years. After another absence, he returned again in 1936, remaining there until his death. He is one of Armenia's best-loved poets.
