The pile a rock of alabaster seems, And huge as Tenerif, when the morning beams Gild the white mists that clothe his middle steep, While his dread summit o'er the subject deep Frowns threat'ning ruin. Darkling in his shade The boldest mariner looks up afraid, And with repeated vows invokes the blast To fill the shrouds, and waft him safely past. Fix'd on a chrystal base the palace stands, And the whole compass of the world commands. High swelling o'er the rest a central dome Form'd like the boasted cupola of Rome, In all the pride of majesty and grace, Heav'd its rotunda to the end of space. Stupendous columns fac'd the front below, Shading the portal in a stately row. Hewn from the solid ether ev'ry stone Distinct with veins of heav'nly beauty shone. Each side was bounded by a tow'r, whose height Vied with the dome, and mock'd the strength of sight, The dull contracted sight of mortal men, But pow'r divine had sharpen'd Alfred's ken. Close under one the agile forms-of things Balanc'd in air unfold their painted wings, And still as Genius breathes prophetic fire, With diligence and zeal that never tire, Show wond'rous pictures, and forestall the date Of embryos slumb'ring in the womb of Fate. Beneath the other, should the God ordain, With equal skill they raise the past again: Hence both are through the wide creation fam'd, And hence the tow'rs of Speculation nam'd. Now Alfred and his guide their flight suspend, And on the steps before the gates descend; Yet, ere their feet the polish'd marble found, + The gates self-moving ope with dreadful sound. The temple echos; not so deep and loud The thunder rumbling from the riven cloud.
