The central theme of this work is the role of physical testing in the development of design methods for new structural forms, new constructional materials and techniques, as well as new approaches to maintenance, repair and operation of structures. Since the late 1970s there has been a growing trend towards full-scale testing of structures and tests have been planned and carried out on some very large scale structures. This work aims to highlight the links between the behaviour assumed in theory and that encountered in service.
