This is a different type of cookery book that would give Bocuse a heart attack. It is, however, a lot of fun and preparation simply and sufficiently described if you have had a little practice in the kitchen. It honors the fact that it is the fat that gives the flavor to a lot of dishes and pulls out all the stops on pies and cakes. Diabetics should just eat very very small portions and get lots of exercise before and after.
I find the selection fascinating. It is oriented to a reader who enjoys entertaining and feeding friends well. It allows preparation of many dishes which can be prepared well in advanced and many stored for long periods, so that surprise guests will also not go hungry. It goes back, perhaps to an earlier time when one took more time to enjoy life with close friends.
Tony Grumley-Grennan has obviously written this as a bit of fun. His special sense of humor and interesting anecdotes liven up the book and make exploring the book in depth a real pleasure. Recipes are not picked on a purely national basis, but basically what pleased Tony on his travels.
I have prepared many of the dishes myself and can report that the Chicken Belgrano went down very well in Germany. Note however that it isn't much good warmed up the next day! Probably Tony never had any left-overs!
I have another version of the book with a lot of really beautifully painted mostly erotic illustrations that many would find beyond l'ordre publique others as hors d'oeuvres, but that is another story.
