For a jaunty, whimsical, yet also political and socially aware melodrama, you need look no further. Daly's Under the Gaslight is awash in mustache curling trickery and good ol' 19th century racism. It's a great example of melodrama of the day (produced in 1867) and even gives a "new" twist on some old turns.
