About the author (1973)

Valerie Margaret Warner was a poet, editor, scholar, translator, teacher, and short story writer. She was born in Harrow, north-west London, on January 15, 1946. She studied modern history at Somerville College, Oxford. She was most known for her rediscovery of the early 20th century poet, Charlotte Mew. She edited a collection of her poetry and prose in 1981 for Carcanet/Virago. Warner's work includes, Under the Penthouse (1973), The Centenary Corbiere (1975), Before Lunch (1986), Tooting Idyll (1998). She gave poetry readings and contributed individual poems to various periodicals. In 1998, she was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Near the end of her life she gave up poetry. She turned to writing novels. Of the 10 she wrote, none of them were completed. Val Warner was found dead on October 10, 2020. She was 74.
