'The time has come for your punishment, Miss Moncrieff. You are to be given one-hundred and forty-four strokes of the paddle,' Miss Dace said.

It was huge. A great flat thing perhaps a foot long and half as much across, made with a wood that was either naturally dark or stained from the sweat of its victims, and a good inch thick.

'What a fine paddle!' Miss Young remarked immediately. 'I imagine it has been put to good use many a time. Come, let's have her clothes off.'

'You are to be fully nude,' Miss Dace said as Thrift's combinations were peeled open and down. 'Disrobel.'

Petticoats, corsets, frilly knickers, lace, and corporal punishment - all part of the Imperial world inhabited by Thrift: a young and naive foreign office agent sent on special missions on behalf of the empire. In Whalebone Strict, Thrift Moncrieff's assignment takes her to the North American colonies, wher she is supposed to compromise the posiition of a politician. More successful than she planned, Thrift is led deeper into difficulties that more often than not lead to the opening of her ankle length corset and elaborate underwear. Either for the entertainment of a string of lecherous men, or to have a hand applied to her delectable buttocks.
