Why Do We Have To Work?
Young people frequently hear mixed messages when it comes to explanations for why we work. The common mainstream message is that work is for pursuing maximum wealth and status; the common rebellious message is that work is for pursuing one's inner calling, regardless of the financial consequences. Why Do We Have to Work? strives to make sense out of these contradictory guidelines. Part I takes an overview of the history of our workday-from the hunter & gatherer to the farmer to the factory worker to the videogame programmer-and Part II offers a guideline for employment that avoids the hollowness that often accompanies the materialistic approach, as well as the poverty that often accompanies the rebellious approach.
