Young Alex Dunham was coming of age in turbulent days, and his life was complicated by a rigid, controlling father. Fortunately, however, Alex found love early, in the ebullient Steffi. This was the love that would sustain him as he, like so many others, entered that great maelstrom of our times, World War II. The conflicts of a courageous officer who experienced the violence of combat and the death of his men, are explored in perceptive detail in this intriguing work, richly evocative of those lost years.
