The story takes place in a world, where for purpose of population control, the monetary system has been replaced with time. Each citizen is fitted with a time tracker that reflects the amount of time in said citizen's "time bank." Like money, a citizen can acquire time through work, inheritence, gift and can lose time by way of purchases, mistakes, disasters, etc. Into this world comes Teaser Broadnax, an unknowing participant in a ground-breaking experiment where the consequence of poverty . . . is death.
