The author provides a fascinating picture of Bulgaria, a beautiful country with a complex heritage. The book tells stories of those who live there, a hardy and warm-hearted people who live full, rich lives in austere conditions. He describes life with neighbors in the old Soviet-style apartment building, encounters with colorful shopkeepers, travel around the country, volunteering at an orphanage, canning preserves for the winter, and even some teaching.

About the author (2012)

Bruce McDonald was an Air Force pilot and worked for an aircraft manufacturer before retiring and asking the question, "What next?" The answer, for him and his wife together, was the Peace Corps. As it always does, the Peace Corps enriched their lives beyond measure.
