About the author (2009)

A native of Helena, Montana, Annie Hanshew is a doctoral student at the University of Utah and the assistant director of the American West Center. Mary Murphy is the Michael P. Malone Professor of History at Montana State University-Bozeman. She is author of Hope in Hard Times: New Deal Photographs of Montana, 1936-1942 and Mining Cultures: Men, Women, and Leisure in Butte, 1914-41.
