This book is a well-written one-volume history of the events and issues leading up to the war, as well as a chronology of the war's campaigns and the changes to the political and social fabric of the country. It is broad in scope, but complete without getting bogged down in too much detail about any one aspect of the war and its times. I found McPherson's historical conclusions sound and well-documented. For someone wanting to learn about the Civil War and its impact on our country, this is a good place to start. For those who have read other authors' accounts, I think you will find this a well-documented and complete history.
