It is the most complete and comprehensive publication of its kind. The utility of what are now known as Who's Who books, of which the London Who's Who, now in its fifty-ninth year of successful publication, may be regarded as the progenitor, is now everywhere recognized. The publishers have endeavored in the present volume to present with completeness and reliability the life sketches of the citizens of the City and State of New York. Some who live in other States but work in New York are included, as well as some New Yorkers whose legal residence is in this State, but who are located at Washington in the Government service, officers in Army and Navy who were born in and appointed from New York, or New York members of the diplomatic or consular service. The book now presented is an entirely new publication; every sketch of persons who were included in the former editions has been revised, condensed or extended. Conciseness in the form of statement, but greater comprehensiveness in the range of information furnished, are marked features of this edition. "Who's Who in New York," in its Second Edition, was the first of the Who's Who books to list the children, in which it has been followed by the English Who's Who. In this edition of our New York book this has been made a systematic feature, thus adding what is certainly an important factor to the biographic records to which the item applies. The authenticity of the records contained in this volume is as absolute as the utmost care can make it. The data have been procured from first hands, and the sketches, when completed, have been submitted to the subject for verification or amendment. The volume is therefore presented as the most reliable compilation of contemporary biography of those citizens of New York City and State whose lives and careers are of greatest interest. The greater part of the facts presented in this volume have never been published before, and of the remaining information little is readily accessible from any other source. The readers of this volume will confer a great favor upon L. R.
