The book shows the development of technique from the frescoes of Giotto to the acrylic paintings of David Hockney, revealing the extent to which changes of technique and the evolution of artist's materials went hand in hand. The book has been compiled with the aid of a team of technical consultants all of whom are picture conservators or art historians who specialize in painting technique. A unique feature of the book is that actual size details of the works are provided to give a clear indication of the scale of the work. In addition over 300 explanatory colour diagrams illustrate the stages of the painting process. A concise textual introduciton, together with a portrait where possible, provides an outline of the career and general technique of the artist. Most of the full colour photographs - over 250 in all - were commissioned especially for this book.
