A fascinating book about a little known part of the world at a little known point of time. In 1928-29 Ms. Strong traveled in and around the Ferghana Valley of Central Asia and into the surrounding mountainous countryside. Her description of the ordinary people, Soviet commissars, traders and scientific researchers --the good, the bad, the ugly--makes you feel as though you were there.
