 Рекордно жаркий день этого лета подходил к концу. Большие, квадратные дома Бирючиновой аллеи окутывало дремотное молчание. Припаркованные возле них автомобили, обыкновенно сверкающие чистотой, потускнели от пыли, а газоны, некогда изумрудно-зелёные, высохли и пожелтели — в связи с засухой и ограничениями на расход воды пользоваться шлангами запрещалось. Местные жители, вынужденные отказаться от привычных занятий — мытья машин и ухода за лужайками — проводили время в своих прохладных домах, широко распахивая окна в надежде заманить в помещение несуществующий ветерок. Единственным человеком, который оставался на улице, был мальчик-подросток, лежавший на спине на клумбе возле дома № 4. Этот тощий, черноволосый мальчик в очках, очевидно, сильно прибавил в росте за очень короткое время, и от этого имел немного нездоровый вид.
