The accomplishment of the United States Olympic Hockey team during the 1972 Olympic Winter Games has seemingly been one of hockey's most well-kept secrets in this country. This is the story of Striking Silver and its members, which included schoolboy heroes and college All-Americans as well as those plucked from the jungles of Vietnam: Ahearn, Bader, Boucha, Brown, Christiansen, Curran, Ftorek, Howe, Irving, McElmury, McGlynn, McIntosh, Mellor, Naslund, Olds, Regan, Sanders, Sarner, Sheehy, and Sears ? the Silver Medalwinning 1972 United States Olympic Hockey team.

This is a great book if you like old-time hockey and a simpler time. The games were in Japan, and the time difference was 14 hours. As a result, nobody was paying attention to USA hockey. In fact, Al Michaels called one game here and that one game got him the assignment at the 1980 games in Lake Placid.
The book shows that the USA and USSR players actually liked and respected each other. And, the coaches also were friendly toward one another. For some players, it was make the team or go fight in The Vietnam War--now that's pressure.
The 1972 team was made up of mostly club players and those who played college hockey at smaller schools. Mark Howe and Rob Ftorek went on to have fine NHL/WHA careers so to say the team was devoid of talent would not be accurate.
This is a good quick read. Once you pick it up, you won;t want to put it down until you are done!
