In the prosecution of the work, old records, manuscripts, and, in some instances, valuable' collections of papers pertaining to the earl y history of the place were dis covered. Some of these were in other towns and States, and were liable to be scattered or destroyed. It was ascertained that important documents and original records which were long supposed to be missing or irrevocably lost were in existence, and in a good state of preservation, and could be referred to or copied at pleasure.
