John O'Neil (1828-1880) was the son of James John O'Neil and Elizabeth Margaret Cummings (b. 1801) of Grey Abbey, County Down, Ireland. John had two brothers, James and William, and three sisters, Elizabeth, Margaret and Helen. The family moved from Grey Abbey to Dalry, Scotland in the 1830's. Family members were converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the 1840's. He married Agnes (Cochran) Hair in 1846 at Dalry, Scotland. In 1864, John and his family immigrated to America. He settled his wife and five children at Midway, Utah.
