AM I BLUE?: Coming Out from the Silence

Editorial Review - Kirkus - Jane Doe

When gay and lesbian adults write about their youthful struggles to come to terms with their gayness, they frequently lament that there was little in books to help them understand their sexuality and accept themselves. In contrast, these stories by 16 luminaries of YA literature will help such young people realize that they are not alone, unique, or abnormal in their sexual orientation. The ... Read full review

I'm glad I didn't miss this book. Finished it during the weekend. My favourite is "Winnie and Tommy", partly because it takes place in San Francisco, my favourite place, partly because the descriptions are just beautiful, especially the dialogue between Millie and her father. Loved it. The one I didn't read was "Blood Sister". I love the book is so dynamic, each of the stories is unique in its own way, and the background of each story is so different. The fact that all the main characters are teenagers my age makes me relate more with the book. There's one thing I didn't get from the book, it's that subtle feeling, when you think you are in love with someone but you cannot tell or touch or show this person how you think about them, that kind of struggle, it's delicate, hurtful, bitter-sweet, it makes your heart shrink. I was looking for this feeling being experienced by characters but the stories didn't quite show that. I guess it's because they are too young, and the book is about the gay/lesbian's struggle between their true identity and their surrounding, not about how painful and sweet it is to love someone you shouldn't love. This book was the only book that I had available to me in my high school library that gave me any positive input on homosexuality and teens. I finally had a name for every painful confusing emotion and longing that I was capable of at 16. I wasn't a sex crazed monster! Just a lesbian! Every teen must read this!

This is the book I hid under my bed at night and read with a flashlight. I loved it, and it opened my world. If you know anyone who is wondering/curious about their sexuality, and may be a little nervous about it, this is the book for them. Read full review
