The Encyclopedia of Tracks and Scats is the first comprehensive guidebook for identifying the tracks and scats of all trackable animals of the United States and Canada. With ample use of photographs and line drawings, Len McDougall, an adroit tracker and an experienced teacher of tracking skills, takes the reader step-by-step from basic identification skills to interpretation and understanding of the animal's behavior by means of its tracks and scats. The Encyclopedia of Tracks and Scats also offers a handy key of track and scat characteristics that enables the reader to quickly verify the source of any markings.

You have to actually READ this book. If you want gorgeous color photos, try THE COMPLETE TRACKER (2nd. Edition), or TRACKING AND READING SIGN - also by Len McDougall, North America's premier tracking expert.

While I haven't read this book, the preview afforded by google books has lead me to believe that the information is dated and inaccurate. This is extreme in the case of turtle information. I have yet to come across recent primary literature (research that is peer reviewed) that indicates territoriality in turtles. The claim that snapping turtles behead dominant painted turtles is ludicrous at best. Observational and anecedotal evidence plagues the study of reptiles, often adding to their bad reputations which in turn hinder conservation attempts.
I was quite surprised to learn this book was published in 2004. Clearly a better understanding of our reptilian fauna is needed to be passed down from the scientific community to the general public.
