I have known and worked with a number of people who personally knew and worked with Walt Disney. Much of the "Walt" I read about in this book had NO bearing or resemblance to the Walt that was always described to me by those who knew him.
I had the pleasure of personally knowing Tommie Wilck for a number of years, Tommie was Walt's last secretary. She adored the man and couldn't say more positive things about him. The most negative thing I ever heard her say about Walt was that he could be impatient... especially when he was excited about something. She also said he'd not accept anything but the best efforts of his staff and had no problems "advising" them of what he expected. Personally, I find no fault in that.
I can't say how accurate the information in this book may be. I do suspect some of the information is colored by rumor, interviews with old, bitter associates and straight urban legends. Sometimes, I got the impression the author may be going out of his way to depict Walt in a different-from-usual light, perhaps to spark some controversy and interest in his book? There's no way to know, for sure. It was more of a "gut feeling" I had. I can't say I'd recommend this book. It was different. It was interesting. But, it was not particularly pleasant to read. One man's opinion.

I first read this while I was in High School and was intrigued to hear that the larger than life figure whose work I adored was such a flawed individual. When I re-read the book later in life, I found this to be a collection of urban legends and unsupported allegations. There are a number of biographies that deal in great detail with the undisputed facts of Walt Disney's upbringing, but what sets this book apart is how it deals with Disney's flaws with no attempt to excuse any of his shortcomings. The trouble is, there is little to no support for most of these allegations. If you are reading a collection of Disney biographies, then include this on your list, but otherwise I can't recommend this book.

I really love the way this writer tells the story of Disney. It seems a realistic account of the man (faults and all), the trials of building his comapny and his dream.
