Commercial mart for the richest corn and stock raising region in the State. Produces the best bituminous coal in the State, taken 53 feet from the surface. From two to four hundred tons mined daily. Published on Thursday of each week, and has a large local and country circulation. Also publishes Dana Hera'd, Ransom Times, Benson Argus, Rutland Post, and Roanoke News.

The Shawnee News is a brilliant republican paper. It has a good business field, Shawneetown being situated at the terminus of the St. Louis & South Eastern, and Springfield & Southern Illinois railroads. The produce of an extensive farming country finds its way to this point. The News is awake to these facts and facilities, and its weekly issues find their way into many homes. It has excellent local management, and good local advertising. It was enlarged a short time ago.
