A good, short depiction of Nathaniel Bowditch's life (1773-1838.) The book was written for young adults to highlight the virtues of study, hard work and modesty, but does an admirable job of giving the highlights of his sea voyages, translations of La Places' works and the development of his book "The American Practical Navigator."
