What people are saying - Write a review
Open country, its 4 issues from 2000 to 2003 are the global communication media for concerns about ecological protection and improvement. This deals with areas like the steppes of Russia, the badlands of Canada and the northern USA - but mainly the northern hemisphere and temperate, sub arctic or arctic areas. The people who live, work and are concerned about these areas, their fauna and flora have knowledge and opinions that are sometimes supported, sometimes ignored by politics, regional, national and international. I was first made aware of these publications and the eastern people who wrote and worked for them at the 2002 Society for Ecological Restoration International conference in Budapest, Hungary. I had met and been impressed by Russian ecologists at other SER conferences and once again was made aware of the intense work being done far away from the forests and suburban Canadian concerns, But in meeting Julia Kuleshova then from Moscow Biodiversity Center and Vladimir Kricsfalusy from Ushgorod University I was given strong examples of work in the east, in the Carpathian mountains by Vladimir's guided tours to restoration and protection of endangered crocii ecotones and Julia's descriptions of the troubles of the Saiga antelope in Europe, Kazakstan and Mongolia, that are reviewed in Open Country 3. All of these magazines deal with serious issues in special places, professionally and passionately.
