A reply to an infamous anonymously published pamphlet entitled: Miscegenation: the theory of the blending of the races, applied to the American White man and Negro, which encouraged the mixing of African Americans and Whites and in which Republican authorship was implied. It was later discovered that the pamphlet was written by Democratic newspapermen as a means by which to insert the inflammatory issue of miscegenation into the presidential campaign of 1864
