The earliest mention of the family in the Registry of the Archbishop of York is found in the will of John Topham, of Pately Bridge, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, dated May I, 1403. It divides his property between his wife Elizabeth and his sons and daughters, but does not give their names.

He was a delegate to the Philadelphia Loyalists' convention of 1866, and presided over the New Hampshire Republican convention on 14 Sept., 1886. In the presidential election of 1872 he supported his life-long friend, Horace Greeley.
