A collection of articles, most of them published previously. Pp. 9-46, "Geschichte der Juden in Hannover - ein Überblick" (appeared in "Juden in Hannover", 1989), relates restrictions and expulsions in the early modern period; the battle for emancipation, and the social isolation of the Jews even after its attainment; antisemitic incidents in the Weimar Republic; and Nazi persecution, culminating in the deportation of 2,400 Jews to the ghettos and concentration camps in the East. Most of the other articles, which deal with communal institutions, mention their fight against antisemitism. Pp. 189-192, "Das Jahr 1933 als Wendepunkt im Leben der hannoverschen Juden" (appeared in "Hannover 1933: Eine Grossstadt wird nationalsozialistisch: Beiträge zur Ausstellung", 1981), describe the April 1 boycott, the dismissal of Jews from workplaces, and the reactions of national-German Jews and Zionists. Pp. 193-204, "Über die Suche nach den Namen jüdischer Opfer aus unserer Stadt" (a speech delivered in January 1997), survey the scanty sources available to the author when he compiled the list of Hannover victims to be inscribed on the city's Holocaust memorial. Tells the stories of several of the victims, most of them active in the Jewish community during the Nazi period.
