Bosnia: A Short History begins in the middle ages and ends shortly after the war that took place in the 1990’s. In recounting history, Malcolm makes a conscious effort to remove bias and speculation from the equation. When he is forced to speculate, he presents all the possibilities and narrows down the most likely truth based on logical deductions. One unfortunate drawback of this logical method is that the book is very dry, and oftentimes I found it hard to get invested into the older periods of history. Personally I believe that the book starts to pick up when Malcolm begins to detail the Austro-Hungarian takeover of Bosnia. Despite the initially slow start, the book is incredibly informative and revealing of Bosnian history, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the history of Bosnia.

Updated edition of highly acclaimed book on history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Contesting myths promulgated by nationalists from Croatia and Serbia since middle of the 19th century onward, book provide readership with a excellent starting point for research into history and culture of this multi-cultural and multi-confessional country.
