“From Russia with Love” by Ian Fleming summary
By Ian Smith
From Russia with Love by Ian Fleming to me is considered “the plot to kill James Bond.” The first 4/10ths of this book explains the plot by SMERSH (death to spies and a department of the Soviet government) to kill the “angliski spion.” The M.G.B wants to kill James Bond because they want to make the British Secret Service to look foolish by taking down their best spy. So the Russians send bait, a pretty looking English woman who is working for SMERSH named Tatiana. The head of this project is Rosa Klebb. And the assassin is a cold blooded killer who was born in Southern Ireland and on a full moon he is deadly!
The other 6/10ths of the book follows 007 as he goes to Istanbul which is a city in Turkey. There is a girl who wants to get back to England because she wants to meet the beautiful James Bond 007 who is famous throughout the British Secret Service. Bond then goes to Turkey and meets up with head of Station T (head of the Turkey section) whose name is Kerim and he calls himself “Darko.” 007 then goes with him to a secret tunnel where he has a scope that submarines use to see from above so that he can spy on the Russians since the scope sees into the secret meeting room.
James then goes with Kerim to his Gypsy friends and watches a deadly fight between two women. Then people came and invaded the Gypsy tribe and Bond helps fight off the invaders. Then the real drama begins.
Bond finally meets up with the girl after being upgraded to a honeymoon suite. Then, the girl, Kerim, and Bond go aboard the Orient Express. It’s the train that runs from Istanbul to Paris and vice versa. Bond has to stay up all night with Tatiana’s head on his lap so he could make sure they’re safe. And they are, for a while.
At the Greek frontier, someone had got into a fight with Kerim and they both killed each other. Bond and Tatiana both got off the train at Belgrade and went with one of Kerim’s sons who calls himself “Tempo.” They went back to his apartment and Bond talked on the phone to M and said that it was all right and he didn’t need backup and he wanted to finish the train journey. After he was done talking, Bond now wanted backup and was hoping that he would send some.
Then in the station of Trieste, 007 was relieved that M sent backup. And Bond knew for sure that M sent backup because he knew the monthly codes of the secret service. Then, there was another night.
The backup came to Bond and Tatiana’s compartment and Tatiana fell asleep. And the backup asked for Bond’s Beretta. Bond gave it to him and Bond went to sleep. There was no lights on except for a violet night light. Then, the backup that was supposed to watch guard all night woke Bond up. And he had his gun pointed at Bond and he told 007 everything that he was SMERSH and that he put something in Tatiana’s wine that was going to make her sleep the whole night no matter what. And the man shot Bond and luckily he survived it and when he woke up the man was dead.
Bond took Tatiana off the train with him in the French frontier and took her with him to an embassy where he was going to stay so he could get back to England safely. So he got called up to this room and he met and elderly woman who was knitting and looked rich and 007 said that the other man couldn’t make it and that his name was “Bond, James Bond.” Bond than say’s that he knows that she is Rosa Klebb and that she planned the assassination of Bond. So Bond got into a huge combat fight with Klebb and saw that there was poison on the tip of her knitting tools. Bond continued fighting with her until two people came to take Rosa away. Then, the way by, she kicked Bond in the back of his right heel and Bond felt a stinging pain and passed out from the pointed boot. And 007 is to be continued and the next novel is Doctor No.
This is one of the better Bond books. As this novel and Diamonds Are Forever have bounced back well from Moonraker which was one of the worse 007 novels. It was exciting and
This is hands down the greatest of the Ian Fleming 007 novels. If you must pick one out of the whole series to read, this should be it. Ah, the Cold War. This is really the apex of Fleming's creative ability. If you're a fan of Bond or just a fan of a good story, this would be an excellent choice.
