A set of ancient inscriptions on marble found 40 years ago in southern Italy, recording details so bewildering that scholars have kept silent about them ...Sensational new information about a group of ancient philosophers who were so intensely practical that, two and a half thousand years ago, they shaped our existence and the world we live in ...These are just two ingredients of this book, which uncovers an astonishing reality right at the origins of the Western world.

About the author (1999)

Peter Kingsley, Ph.D., recently moved to the United States from Canada and lives with his wife in New Mexico. He is a writer who works to bring together two spheres that for so long have been kept wide apart: the world of direct mystical experience and the world of scholarship. The recipient of many academic awards and honors both in England and in Canada, he is currently an honorary professor at the University of New Mexico (as well as at Simon Fraser University, Canada) and lectures widely throughout North America.
