New in paperback, the fierce and charismatic Charlie Fox must choose between her duty to her client and her desire to avenge her lover’s attacker†With the life of her lover, Sean, still hanging in the balance, former Special Forces soldier turned bodyguard, Charlie Fox, throws herself into her only means of escape—her work.†On Long Island, the playground of New York’s wealthy and privileged, she is tasked with protecting the wayward daughter of rich businesswoman, Caroline Willner. It seems that an alarming number of the girl’s circle of friends have been through kidnap ordeals, and Charlie quickly discovers that the girl herself, Dina, is fascinated by the clique formed by these former victims. Is that why she seems to be going out of her way to invite capture?†But just as her worst fears are realized, Charlie receives devastating personal news. The man who put Sean in his coma is on the loose. She is faced with the choice between her loyalties to her client and avenging Sean, but the two goals are soon inextricably linked. The decisions Charlie makes now, and the path she chooses to follow, will have far-reaching consequences.

Sharp is sharp. This book picks up three months after the events of Fourth Day. Parker Armstrong assigns Charlie to protect a spoiled rich kid whose friends, also spoiled and rich, have been either kidnapped or are potential targets of being kidnapped. Sharp showed how Charlie's upper-middle class upbringing made her fit quite comfortably in that world. The mystery was very good, and figuring out who the kidnapping mastermind was was well concealed. If only Sharp would just stick a knife in the Charlie-Sean romance the series would that much better.
This is an excellent read. It can be read as a stand-alone, but it reads better when you understand the background behind some of the issues in the book.
