Each of the plays in this collection focuses on the life of one exceptional woman. Piaf documents the professional and personal triumphs and disasters of the great French singer Edith Gassion (known as piaf, 'the sparrow'). In Camille, based on Alexandre Dumas' celebrated novel La Dame aux Camelias, the courtesan Marguerite Gautier has the misfortune to fall in love, causing the destruction of her metier and her life. The heroine of Queen Christina has been trained and educated as a prince, but as a female monarch is expected to do little more than marry and breed children.
