Page 87 - In an effort to find a lower coal seam sufficiently thick to be profitably mined, a hole was drilled in the bottom of the shaft which passed into oil-bearing sand at a depth of 255 feet below the coal and 682 feet below the surface. The salt water at first threatened to flood the mine, but the hole was successfully plugged, though oil leaked into the mine and was skimmed from the mine water for several years.
