Prof. Bolton was the read deal. This is the second documentation of exploration into Ulta California 1770. Portola was the year eariler. Bolton also transulated Portola. As with any writer of history, one can only go with the trail left behind by those who made the history. In 1936 Bolton was taken-in by a fake plate of brass reported to have been left in San Francisco Bay in 1579 by Francis Drake. Uncovered years later as a hoax, George Barron, curator of history of the de Young, had the fake plate made and planted along the San Francisco Bay. Garry Gitzen's "Oregon Stolen History" and "Francis Drake in Nehalem Bay 1579" covers the full story.
