Fundamental to the study of tourism is the relationship between tourism and development. Tourism represents a major sector of the global economy and, as such, is considered by many to be an effective driver of economic growth and development in destination areas. Importantly, however, most destinations face what has been referred to as a ‘development dilemma’. Whilst the benefits afforded by tourism, including income, foreign exchange and government revenue generation, employment, economic linkages, infrastructural development and environmental enhancement, are recognised, so too are the negative consequences of tourism development.

This Major Work illustrates tourism and development through a collection of key papers which have contributed to knowledge of and debates in this significant area of tourism studies. The literature is framed by an extensive introductory chapter which highlights the key concepts, themes and debates.

About the author

Richard Sharpley isProfessor of Tourism and Development at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK. He has previously held positions at a number of other institutions, including the University of Northumbria (Reader in Tourism) and the University of Lincoln, where he was professor of Tourism and Head of Department, Tourism and Recreation Management. He is co-editor of the journal Tourism Planning & Development, a resource editor for Annals of Tourism Researchand a member of the editorial boards of a number of other tourism journals. His principal research interests are within the fields of tourism and development, island tourism, rural tourism and the sociology of tourism and his books include Tourism and Development: Concepts and Issues(2002, with David Telfer) - 2nd edition forthcoming 2015; Tourism and Development in the Developing World(2008, with David Telfer), Tourism, Tourists and Society, 4thEdition(2008); The Darker Side of Travel; The Theory and Practice of Dark Tourism (2009, with Philip Stone); Tourism, Development and Environment: Beyond Sustainability (2009); and Tourist Experience: Contemporary Perspectives(2011, with Philip Stone). A second edited collection on tourist experiences, The Contemporary Tourist Experience: Concepts & Consequences, was published in 2012 whilst, drawing on his experience in tourism education, his book The Study of Tourism: Past Trends and Future Directions was published in 2011.
