Amazing book. So clear and easy to understand. Tons of great and diverse examples. I couldn't understand the textbook for my class at all so my teacher lent me this and it helped me pass and understand the class. For the absolute beginner, I'd recommend Tom's book Describing Sentence Structures. That one is more for the learning student. And someone mentioned that it's a bit too simple for postgrad.. I don't know since I'm not one, but I would think so. But for someone with a bit of background but definitely not a solid foundation on any of this stuff, I don't think this book can be beat.
