This book was written by one of the best specialists of musical history from the early 20th century. He was well respected and a premier journal of music instrument history The Galpin Journal is named for him.
One thing to not about this book. When reading the articles for the Gittern and the Citole, reverse the names. In 1977 another musicologist named Lawrence Wright straightened out the confusion in names for the old musical instruments. One result was to understand that while Galpin's facts for the instruments are generally correct, the names he used are the polar opposite of the names used today.
