In this program, the "Family of man" exhibition of photographs at the Museum of Modern Art is discussed by Edward Steichen, noted photographer and curator at the Museum of Modern Art, and guests Eleanor Roosevelt, Carl Sandburg, and AMNH anthropologist Harry L. Shapiro. Roosevelt narrates the first segment of the program which depicts families around the world through photographs of mothers, fathers, children, lovers, marriage and birth. Shapiro shows images (of man laboring, tilling the soil, and playing) to illustrate how humans relate to the earth. People's relationship with one another is the subject of the third segment, presented by Sandburg. Viewers see the darker side of life, including scenes of war, death, hunger, loneliness, cruelty, and religion. A series of views of children subtitled "Childhood Magic" examines how mankind regenerates itself with each new generation.
