Although written over thirty-five years ago, & no longer completely current with regard to the location & availability of archival materials, this is still the best book on Irish genealogy ever published; indeed, it is absolutely basic, & no one can even begin to think of doing any work in Irish genealogy without it. When it first appeared in 1962 the critics were unanimous in their praise, saying then what is just as true today-that such a book could never be surpassed, much less equalled. Clearly, no single book-no group of books-can match this in helping Americans to locate the precise areas from which their Irish ancestors came, identify families, & trace the earlier generations of their orogenitors, & we are therefore delighted to announce the publication of this monumental work in a reprint edition. The first volume of the work is a guide to preliminary research. It describes genealogical collections & indexes in all of the major Irish repositories, as well as the published indexes, catalogues, & printed sources that are available in Ireland & the United States. In general, source records & record repositories are discussed with regard to the researcher's needs & special problems, the various chapters detailing the types of records that can be found & where they can be found (important because of the destruction of the Public Record Office in Dublin in 1922), the nature & extent of the holdings, the dates of coverage, & the existence of indexes to such basic source materials as wills & probates, birth, marriage, & burial records, land, census, & tax records, & records of church & parish. This volume is introduced by an authoritative discussion of the problems facing Americans in their Irish genealogical research, & it is a must for every reader. Volume Two-taking a different approach to the research problem-is a bibliography of family histories, pedigrees, & source materials published in books & periodicals, & it encompasses such printed works as parish, town, & county histories, church records, & compiled family histories. In addition, it contains the following: a list of over 1400 manuscript family histories deposited in the public record offices of Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland, a survey of the microfilm holdings of various American & Irish institutions, inventories of other manuscript collections, & an index to family history articles appearing in over twenty periodicals.
