“Dr. Nzekwe has written an insightful and thought – provoking study on the state of education in Nigeria both before and after their independence in 1960, with a special emphasis on the factors that have contributed to the significant high school dropout rates among young Nigerian Igbo males since the mid 1980s. This study is made all the more credible by the fact that Dr. Nzekwe is a product of the very educational system he writes about. What is especially interesting is the oral testimony of both the young and old in Igbo society, along with the facts and figures in support of their claims. In his conclusion, Dr. Nzekwe is right on target when he states, “curriculum should be relevant to global needs such as the inclusion of more science and technology in the basic curriculum, but not at the expense of a holistic view of the needs of the society in question. Schooling is designed to produce literacy in all fields of life, but especially literacy in one’s culture.” I can only hope and pray, as we all should, that the solutions Dr. Nzekwe envisions will be implemented as soon as possible”.

About the author (2007)

Amauchechukwu Anselm Nzekwe of Amadaba-Ibiasoegbe, Imo State, had first degree studies in philosophy and theology from Spritan School of Philosophy, Nsukka and Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu in Nigeria. He has a masters degree in education from John Carroll University Cleveland, a Ph.D. in Secondary Education (Curriculum and Instructional Studies), and post-doctoral certificate for Information Technology from the University of Akron, Ohio, with continuing professional education at Saint Elizabeth Medical Center, Nigerian-Igbo Catholic Community, Bridgeport Diocese, Fourth Degree of Knights of Columbus, Fairfield County, Connecticut. His hobbies include learning languages, reading, lawn tennis, and traveling.

*The drop out failed to accomplish an educational milestone as a person, while the school failed to meet expectations of the student.
