The man does not understand French...it is a mediocre translation!
Richard Wilbur wrote rhyming couplet translations of Moliere. This is very difficult to do, and most such translations sound clunky, as do Wilbur's. But Wilbur's are better than most. They are good, serviceable texts and they don't sound too bad in performance.
