Adam was the leader of a pack of children abandoned in the tunnels beneath the Island after the slaughter of their parents by the Rockees. When the Rockees discover the children's thefts, Adam tries to convince the children to leave the Island, but is unable to overcome their fear and inertia. He abandons the children to their fate, and sets out in search of the Old Man who held the knowledge of the ancients and the Terror which crushed their civilization. Adam's journey leads him from the Island, through the Country to the villages living in fear of the Enforcers and each other--and finally to love, fatherhood and family. Eventually, he sacrifices everything to his quest for the Old Man and his thirst for knowledge, sacrificing everything for the sake of understanding.
