I too found this book to be disappointing. It feels like all they did is compile a bunch of user instructions from various products and called it a book.
There really isn't any build-it-yourself going on - the projects all start with a line to the effect of "buy these expensive components".
It also promotes HAL and X-10 throughout the book - most projects require one or the other - as if those two companies paid the author to write it.
My recommendation is to just skip the book and use the instructions that come with whatever product you intend to use in your home. With this book already being 6 years old, the technologies they recommend are likely already outdated anyway.
